We’ve Hit an Important Milestone for Health-related DNA Results

August 29, 2022

The All of Us Research Program is excited to announce that we are another step closer to giving participants their health-related DNA results.

On August 30, we will launch our pilot test for health-related DNA results. We’ll ask about 1,000 participants if they want us to prepare their results. This is the first step in getting health-related DNA results.

There are two reports that participants can get:

If any of these participants tell us they want one or both reports, we will start preparing them. Preparing the reports is step 2, and it takes a few weeks to a few months.

The participants in our pilot test will start to receive their results before the end of the year. Receiving personalized DNA results is the third and final step. We will share more details about this process in future updates. If you’re interested, you can read our previous genomics updates.

Who is eligible for these DNA results?

Right now, almost 200,000 All of Us participants are eligible to get health-related DNA results. Participants who have completed all of these steps can get DNA results if they want them:

  • Agreed to share their electronic health records
  • Completed The Basics survey
  • Said “Yes” to the Consent to Get DNA Results
  • Provided a blood or saliva sample
Who will All of Us contact on August 30?

We will contact All of Us participants who were the first to share a blood or saliva sample.

Why are there multiple steps?

There are a few reasons for this:

  1. Health-related DNA results contain sensitive, personal information. We will create these reports only after we know participants definitely want them.
  2. There are some risks associated with getting these results. We want to make sure participants understand these risks before we create the reports.
  3. If we find a genetic variant that shows an increased risk of certain health conditions, we will verify the result.
  4. Before we notify participants that their results are ready, a specially trained scientist will confirm the results and sign off on the reports. This way, participants can know that their results are as accurate as possible.
When will you be able to complete step 1?

Once you’re eligible, we will send you an email or text message when it’s your turn to tell us if you want health-related DNA results. When we contact you is based on when you gave us your blood or saliva sample. Participants who gave a sample first will be contacted first.

It may be several more months before we contact you. You will be able to track our progress in our national newsletter

August 30 is an exciting milestone for us. It is also just the beginning. We’re starting with a small group of participants. We’ll make sure that everything is working as planned. Over time, we’ll be able to notify thousands of participants every week.

We hope that you are as excited about this milestone as we are. None of this would be possible without your participation.
